Cornell Center

Cornell Center

Before Lower Metrolegoland was Lower Metrolegoland, train yards covered this area below the city. In 1988, a private group started the Cornell Corporation, a venture to develop the unused train yards into commercial and residential developments. The idea was grandiose: turn Metrolegoland into a modern city, devoid of the industrial complexes of yesteryear.

The ground was broken in late 1988 for a new commercial mall, Cornell Center. The original mall consisted of four separate retail stores and a gas station. In 1989, the Center was remodeled as a one-strip shopping mall with a covered walkway, parking garage, and gas station with carwash. The Saybrook residential development came the following year, and the four-lane Sandy Hook Highway next door was the new expressway through Metrolegoland.

As with the rest of Lower Metrolegoland, Cornell Center was removed from its setting when the lower city was disassembled. It now sits on a shelf near the current city, waiting to return to a life in the big city.

Back to Lower Metrolegoland.
